i don’t think i had actually ever had a tuna melt before this year started but i got caught up pretty quickly
- kenny & zuke’s deli, portland - this place is fucking unreal, such a good sandwich and the cook was really good to us, too. i promised i wouldn’t tell but basically he hooked me up.
- pete’s grille, baltimore - with lettuce and tomato added, which they do near the end so it’s still cold and crisp, didn’t think you could do that but at one point they suggested it and i haven’t gone back to plain ones since.
- pete’s grille, baltimore - pete’s grille, man, i fucking love pete’s, also their fries are so good and i generally feel pretty apathetic about fries.
- broadway diner, baltimore - earlier today, but i also had their tuna melt on a date that ended up here at 2am a few months ago. served with fries and coleslaw and a pickle.
- court square diner, long island city - this was huge, open-faced, served with fries, and someone else’s treat…
- fuller’s coffee shop, portland - simple, solid tuna melt, from a really normal looking place that seems otherwise out of place in that built-up whole foodsy area
- 7A diner, new york - really good tuna melt that i ate for breakfast even though it probably wasn’t socially appropriate
- chit chat diner, new jersey - very solid tuna melt, pretty sure it came with a cup of chicken soup too, which was completely unnecessary but hey whatever
- that time meryl suggested i just make a tuna melt at home and it wasn’t amazing but after a week of being sick and eating only popsicles, yes, yes it was
- the dizz, baltimore - pretty standard, but you know, this isn’t exactly a hard sandwich to make, no complaints. besides i remember being drunk for this meal.
(BONUS) WORST TUNA MELTS:
- kelloggs diner, brooklyn - this is not a fucking tuna melt, it’s a pita covered in two sandwiches’ worth of tuna fish, then topped with cheese triangles. god i fucking hate this place why would you go here when hana food is on the same block.
- lyric diner, new york - i really just wanted to eat some feelings after seeing “weekend,” and they make them on a bagel, which should have been double awesome but it was just pretty underwhelming. i didn’t mind that they forgot my order for twenty minutes, but i did mind that it was pretty burnt.
- lost city diner, baltimore - i know it’s supposed to be a little fancier, but that sauce you add on top of the cheese just sort of slides off the shiny cheese shell, sorry if i sound like a crazy person, but then again, i am writing a list of best tuna melts so you know… i am a crazy person.
- papermoon diner, baltimore - i work at a diner for six months and they don’t even have a tuna melt on the menu at all, seriously how is that okay?
